Shady areas can be transformed with good planting.  Since we don't tend to use our shady bits for seating areas it makes them perfect for planting.  Use these spaces to create additional layers of privacy for your garden and to benefit nature.

There are different levels of shade: 

• Deep shade - even on a sunny day the planting area stays dark and cool

• Light shade - planting area doesn't get direct sunlight but is not dark.  I.e. North facing gardens

• Dry shade - under trees or against walls where there is no direct sun and planting area is protected from rain
